

The Nikaah or wedding ceremony can be conducted at the home of the bride or the groom, or at any other convenient venue like Wedding Halls. A Maulvi (priest) in the presence of close family members and relatives conducts the ceremony. In orthodox Muslim communities, the men and women are seated separately. The 'Walis' (the father of the bride and of the bridegroom) play an important role in the ceremony.
The Maulvi reads selected verses from the Quran and the Nikaah is complete after the Ijab-e-Qubul (proposal and acceptance). The boy's side proposes and the girl's side conveys her assent. The mutual consent of the bride and groom is of great importance for the marriage to be legal. On the day of the Nikaah that the elder members of the two families decide the amount of Mehar (nuptial gift).
The Mehar is a compulsory amount of money given by the groom's family to the bride.
The Muslim Wedding is Called as Nikaah in Sri lanka too. Can be conducted at Brides or Bridegroom home or in a Wedding hall. Muslim priest called Moulavi Conducts the ceremony.This is a ceremony, well attended by the relatives in a joyfully manner. At the wedding hall men and women are seated separatley. Parents specially father of the Bride and Bridegroom take the leading role of the wedding.
Moulavi conducts the wedding by saying the important verses of Holy Quran for the wedding and after bridegroom side people proposing and the brides side group accepting which is called Ljab E Qubal, the wedding is complete. As to Muslim law both bride and bridegrooms agreeing is very important on that day for the Nikaahnama. Nikaahnama Gives all guides which should be signed by the bridegroom, bride, Father of Bridegroom, father of bride, and the Maulvi. As the wedding is over newly wed couples will receive the elders blessings.
A very special expensive Dinner too takes place separately for men and women, After that the couple sit ogether along with Quaran and read quran verses According to the priest.
