Beauticians

In modern day Tamil weddings, bride's beauticians take a big part in preparing and doing makeup of the bride for the wedding ceremony. Earlier days the bride's friends and relatives did the makeup for the bride on the wedding day with out any charge. Now a professional beautician may charge US$ 2,000 for a wedding package. The beautician's wedding package may include designing the saree blouse, dressing and makeup on the wedding day, changing the "Kurai" sarre during the wedding ceremony and makeup and preparing the bride for the official wedding registration ceremony.

Large amount of time is allocated to the Beauty care of the Bride by the beautician to makeup her face, dress and decorate her with beautiful Gold jewellery such as

1. "Netti Paddam or uchchip paddam" which stays on the forehead of the bride coming from the centre of the head.
2. Along with two Sun and Moon jewellery.
3. kankanam on both hands.
4. "Ottiyanam" on the waist.
5. "kasumalai" on the chest.
6. "Thodu"in the ears"Kathu mattal" on the ear to back of the hair.
7. Necklace on the Neck.
8. Bangles on both hands.
9. Rings on the fingers.
10. "Pathakam" with Gold and Pearl chain.
11. "Mookkuththi" on the nose.

After a good doing of hair a Long "Nagasadam' attached to it on the long hair tail. This may be with flowers or Shining ornaments.

Normally the Beauticians need the Bride's first visit 3 weeks before the marriage day to make her skin to make brighter and shinning, then after one week another visit and two days before the wedding day a visit. On the Wedding day they need at least 6 hours to prepare the Bride for the occasion. Also the beauticians take care of the make up of the Bridal Girls who are called as "Tholee" in Tamil. Normally the beautician requires the bride and her associates to be there in her suite at 2.00AM on the day of the wedding to prepare her for the wedding.

If the marriage is taking place in a hotel and the beautician requires the bride to stay in one of the hotel room, then the hotel will allow only one person to stay in the room to accompany the bride. If they want to accompany one more person in the room the hotel owners may charge extra 10,000/- for the accompanying third person.

If requested, these beauticians provide service to make fantastic models of cakes for the wedding, Rich cake for the marriage function in small beautiful packets and multi stage cakes for the official wedding Registration ceremonies too. Beauticians' charges may differ by their experience and of their popularity in the region.

Anyhow, in Sri Lanka bride's girl friends still take charge to makeup and dress her for the big day function at no cost in the Jaffna district. This is done in fun filled glorious enjoyable mood in the private room of the bride.
