There are two "panchangam", one is mathematically calculated by the Sun and stars position to get the true date is called as "Thiruk kanitha Panchchangam". The other one is called as "Vakkiya Panchchangam" in which ancient songs are used to get the New Year date. Both of them are always got a little difference. Any how jaffna Tamil people, Saiva Kovils and Temples mostly relay on the "Vakkiya panchangam" to get the correct dates.

Tamil New year or "Varusap Pirappu" is a day to pray to God and do auspicious things and to have a fantastic holiday.

On the New Year day people must put "Maruththu Neer" on their head body and leg facing the given direction and then take bath with fresh water. Then they will wear the given cloured new cloth according to the "Panchangam". Then they will go to the temple with the "Pooja" things and the silk cloth for the God according to the "Panchangam. They will stay at the temple before the New year birth time as there will be special poojas will take place in the temple at the time of new year birthing. Then they will come back to their homes and will offer special poojas in their homes.

While going to temple or while coming back to the house they will not deal with money. At the home too they will look in the "Panchangam" for the auspicious time to give and get "Kai visesam" wwhich means giving and getting money, most of the Tamil people believe if this isdone correctly it will bring them wealth and prosporus life.

Head of the family person will keep money on a beatle leaf in the pooja room in front of the God images and will be offered a small poioja ceremony. Any amount with added one rupee as if he wants to give his family one hundred rupee each then he will make it as 101 and give it to them each inside the pooja room. Thos who get the money with the beatel leaf will fold it in their hand and put it on their eyes and will pray. Normally they don't spend that particular money and will keep it in a safe place.

Elders used to call youngsters of the other families to come and collect that "Kai visesam" in their homes in the auspicious times. Some people select good hearted generous people and will tell them that they are going to come to their home to get the "Kai visesam" money for their prosperity.

In selected good days like Monday Wednesday, Friday and Sunday people use to visit their parents, brothes, sisters and other relatives homes.
In these days people use to make new sweets and food items to present to other families and peoples.
